Song of the Day

Today’s SOTD is a new single from the classic rap group the Beastie Boys. The song itself is alright, but what I wanted to highlight most is the video. If you haven’t seen it yet, just look out for the 5000  many A-list stars who make a cameo appearance in it. Funny stuff, especially the cowbell scene.

Classic Drizzy with this one. “Closer” is one of my favorite Drake songs. Dude’s been AWOL lately, meaning he’ll probably start leaking stuff off of his next album, whenever that comes out.

Welcoming…

We are proud to announce a new contributor to the CSC, Adam Cohen. Although he’s a freshman at Tulane, we (Blake and I) both felt that he would really help us reach that next level. Plus, check out that SWAG!

This means we will each post a SOTD every three days. Pretty easy concept, lemme know if you need help understanding.

Atmosphere-Puppets

I guarantee this won’t be the only time you see me posting these guys as the Song of the Day. One of my favorite rappers, Slug (Sean Daley), along with DJ/Producer Ant (Anthony Davis), make up the notoriously known (underground at least) duo called Atmosphere. Coming up in Minneapolis, they’ve stayed Independent since they’ve began recording music in 1993. That’s real. These guys could have easily sold out for million upon millions of dollars (I mean Mac Miller is a millionaire, imagine what these guys could make), but chose to instead give a big FU to the Sonys, Warners, and Universals of the business. This song is off “When Life Gives you Lemons, you Paint that Sh*t Gold.”

Mos Dub-Mr. Universe

One of my favorite rappers of all time is Mos Def. Black on Both Sides was a classic, and when I first heard that, I was hooked on everything he put out (not all his movies though…). Forming Black Star with best friend Talib Kweli, the duo turned into one of the most popular rap group of all time, while staying true to themselves and not rapping about how thug they are and how many cool cars they have.

In comes Max Tannone, a New York producer. He decided to make a cd mixing Brooklyn Hip Hop and Jamaican reggae, and did so seamlessly. Check out Max’s website to download the album, or just go here to download the song. Great good weather music, so have this cd ready for driving around in the summer.

Song of the Day

[vimeo http://vimeo.com/19586688]

What is more fitting for a blog that covers music and sports than a hip-hop song named after a former NBA all-star? Rockie Fresh‘s A.C. Green (yes, he made one all-star appearance) is a song that, according to B.E.T., “takes its name from the renowned NBA player known for his longevity and dedication to the game.” Rockie raps about how he has to make it to “The Otherside” (also the name of his mixtape), as in he has to reach his dreams of becoming a huge star in the world of hip hop. The video that accompanies the song does a great job of showcasing Rockie in real life and his future fantasy world. Rockie is a graduate of Chicago’s very own Homewood-Flossmoor and is well on his way to becoming a successful MC.

J.Cole, or Jermaine Lamarr Cole, pictured above in his Jordan retro XII’s, performed at this past summers Lollapalooza. He brought about many casual fans, a few dedicated ones, and plenty of newcomers as is typical of Lolla. He left with a lot more of those dedicated ones. Recently signing onto Roc Nation, he is often considered the next to blow (yes, even more than he already has).

This is a song he recorded in 2006, with an old Biggie sample. Check it out, it’s called Can I Get Wit Ya f/ Notorious B.I.G.
