Video: Chief Keef “Love Sosa”

I don’t personally stand by Chief Keef or his movement, GBE, but I give the people what they want. ChiSide doesn’t discriminate. The controversial Chicago emcee drops the video for his latest banger, “Love Sosa”. Not even going to lie, this track more listenable than a lot of Keef’s previous stuff.

Kembe X continues to impress with his latest track, “Distance Pains”. Hard to believe this kid is only 17 (maybe 18) and is already at this level.

Video: Kembe X “Sawbuck (New Smoker’s Anthem)”

One of my favorite up-and-coming artists out of the Chi, Kembe X dropped his first official video off of the mixtape Self Rule, a song called “Sawbuck (New Smoker’s Anthem)”. Kembe is a future star in the game, in my opinion. I recommend that you must download his mixtape. I haven’t seen a more talented rapper at age 17 since Earl Sweatshirt.

Wonders of the Web: RapGenius.com

I’m sure most of you hip-hop fans are familiar with Jay-Z’s latest book release, Decoded, which chronicled the basis and the meanings of lyrics from one of hip-hop’s most bright and powerful artists. RapGenius.com brings what Jay-Z brought to the table with decoded, but with almost any artist you’d like. Want to know what the hell Lupe Fiasco is rapping about in “Dumb it Down”? RapGenius has all the answers.

Click on any word/phrase/bar and a pop-up appears, along with an explanation or two (or six) about the lyric(s).

How does it work, you ask? Well, as the site itself points out, RapGenius is “A hip-hop Wikipedia“. Users can create accounts and get points (called RapIQ) every time one contributes an explanation to a song. If you can accumulate enough points, you may one day be able to edit anything on the site, a la Wikipedia. Additionally, if you can’t find a song you are looking for, you have the option of adding a song to the website. In no time, your song will likely be explained by the hoards of lyric “geniuses” on RapGenius.

Go ahead, try it out. I guarantee you’ll spend hours reading and finally figuring out what your favorite artist has been spitting about all this time.

Song of the Day

Shouts to the hater Melvin Shabazz. Didn’t understand the whole “Derrick Rose just went off in the NBA playoffs and the Bulls started what should be an amazing, long journey-so I’m gonna post a song in which the chorus is ‘I am Number One'” thing I was trying to do, so my apologies.

ANYWAYS, todays song of the day goes to up and comers on the Chicago music scene, Filligar. The band includes brothers Johnny, Teddy, and Pete Mathias, along with Casey Gibson. This is one of my favorite bands currently, and if they’re ever in the town you are, they are a must-see live. Their music is a mix of a ton of different musical genres, so the best you could do is describe their sound as an eclectic-melodious-carefree-really good one. The rare ground between being like a coffee house soundtrack you want on at all times, to a rock band that finds you singing along with every word.

Can you tell who the non-Mathias is?

Won’t say too much more about them as I plan to do an “Artist Spotlight” in the upcoming week.

“Trepador” is from the bands 5th album, and is an anthem destined to get your foot tapping and head bobbing. Available for download here.
